Olympic Summer Games is the 16-bit official videogame of the 1996 Olympic Games held in Atlanta, the third and the last IOC official title to be released on the console. A typical button masher, it includes 10 events (100m sprint, 110m hurdles, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, javelin, high jump, discus, skeet and archery) and 32 countries around the world compete in custom or full Olympics, or just practice. Two players can compete head to head in the sprinting events, and a total of eight can play in the same game. Three difficulty levels allow competitive events for both rookies to veterans in the genre.
The story is set around the 1996 Olympic Games held in Atlanta, with various countries competing against each other. The gameplay revolves around different track and field events, where players compete individually or head-to-head.
Sprinting events are a short and straight button mashing frenzy. Four athletes compete simultaneously, with the first winner advancing to the next round (two qualifiers and then the medal run). Only fast fingers and quick reactions can earn world record times. The competition continues until all athletes miss three consecutive jumps.
Jumping events require both timing and technique. Players need to press the jump button at the right moment to clear the bar, with events such as high and long jump requiring a combination of sprinting and jumping skills. The triple jump requires careful measurement of each jump, while pole vault demands a strong run followed by a precise pole throw.
The throwing events (discus and javelin) require similar technique to the jumping events, but with added complexity due to the need to set an angle before releasing the throw. Each player is entitled to three throws, with the top eight allowed one more attempt.
Finally, the shooting events. Archery involves hitting targets with arrows, where accuracy and strategy are key. Players must calculate their aim according to wind direction and choose between steady or quick shots. Skeet requires hitting clay pigeons with a shotgun before they disappear off-screen.
