Sniper Elite V2 is both a sequel to and a remake of Sniper Elite . It takes Karl Fairnburne, the protagonist of the first game, and offers a setting in the same period of the original title. The gameplay and levels are however entirely new, so it is only a remake in the sense that it re-envisions the character and the setting of the original game. Fairburne is an American agent of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) who is disguised as a German sniper and is inserted in the Battle of Berlin in 1945 during the final days of World War II. In this game he needs to hunt down German V-2 rocket scientists.
This shooter is played from a first-person perspective and puts tactics and stealth before direct engagements. The gameplay focuses on observation, movement patterns, and careful planning. Players can use various tools such as rocks, grenades, and trip mines to distract guards or escape danger. A threat indicator displays how exposed the player is, and failure to avoid alarms can lead to an overwhelming enemy threat.
The different game modes include singleplayer, cooperative games, and competitive multiplayer. Cooperative games offer a variety of challenges, including endless waves of enemies, vehicle repair missions, and sniper cooperation with operatives. The game also features a main campaign that can be played with a friend in co-op mode.
Compared to the first game, Sniper Elite V2 incorporates elements from contemporary shooters, such as point rewards for actions and kills, and a slow motion kill cam for long-distance hits. The game also features additional features like white figures showing enemy soldier positions and the ability to mark fighters for target information.
The mission environments are designed to guide the player in a direction while offering some freedom to explore. Hidden bottles and gold bars can be collected, adding an extra layer of replay value to the game.
