Set 40 years before the Sci-Fi Channel's 2004 Battlestar Galactica , this game acts as a prequel to the events in the new series. Players control Captain William Adama as he participates in 15 missions leading up to the end of the First Cylon War. Missions are tightly scripted and require players to control three types of Viper fighters, captured Cylon raiders, or stationary defense turrets on board the Galactica . The game features clear goals with time limits, expressed through voiced radio chatter between wingmen and the war room. Players are graded in various areas after each level, unlocking upgrades and bonus material for high ratings.
Players control their craft from either a first or third person view. The fighters have unlimited ammo and missiles, but require recharging energy to repair any damage taken. Firing weapons and using afterburners drain energy, so players must manage their energy levels carefully.
Missiles on every craft can be configured on the fly through an option in the pause menu. Pilots can program missiles to have increased power or speed, adapting them to the current needs of the mission.
The game's art and design are pulled from the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica . The intro from the original series is used, with Cylons, Colonial Vipers, and the Galactica using the same designs as before. The Cylons themselves look like their chrome toasters appearance in the original series.
The game's Xbox release date was 12 December 2003. It is a Simulation genre title.
