"My Player" mode allows players to create a rookie and take him through a career in the NBA. Players can manage their character's RPG-style stats, handle them on and off the court, and build up skill points. "Association" mode lets players manage a team as both coach and GM, with an emphasis on team chemistry and player egos.

Online features include forming clubs and leagues, tracking club stats, and participating in multiplayer simulations of seasons. The game also includes new modes like the "NBA Blacktop" and "Slam Dunk Showdown," as well as a "NBA Today 2.0" system that updates player stats and injuries in real-time.
