Split/Second is a TV show that focuses on cars, destruction, and explosions. The player is hired by the show's producers to participate in twelve episodes of the new season, potentially becoming the next champion. In this arcade-focused racing game, players control fake-named sport cars inspired by real-world vehicles.
The gameplay involves accessing a power play bar by performing drifts, drafting, jumping, or avoiding activated power plays. The three sections of the bar fill up, with the third section granting access to a level two power play. When a section is filled, an icon above the cars ahead indicates the type and power of the upcoming event.
The events can range from helicopters dropping exploding barrels to parked cars rigged to explode, or larger events like train bridges that go up in flames. The player must use the power plays strategically to wreck their opponents or gain an advantage. However, using these power plays also risks losing control and crashing themselves.
The game features various modes beyond normal racing, such as Destruction, Air Strike, Air Revenge, Time Trial, and Elimination events. These modes require the player to navigate through tracks with automatically triggered power plays, dodge missiles, or eliminate opponents from the pack.
As players progress through the campaign, they earn credits by finishing events in different positions. Credits are used to unlock new cars, special decals, and access to elite races. Each episode also features a bonus event that must be unlocked first by wrecking a certain number of cars.
The game supports split-screen mode for two players as well as online multiplayer for up to eight players with three different game modes available on all platforms.
