Starting and Ending Your Journey
This section teaches you how to begin a new game, load a saved game, and save your progress. You will start in the "Title Room" with three paths: STARD, MONKEY, and HERO.
Starting a New Game
To begin your quest, walk through the doorway marked "START".
Before starting a new game, ensure you have at least one free Memory Card block on your memory card to save your game.
Loading a Saved Game
If you have a saved Monkey Hero game, walk through the doorway marked "LOAD".
If a Memory Card with Monkey Hero save games is in Slot 1, a list will display with elapsed time for each game. Select your desired saved game and press the button to continue.
Saving Your Game
You can save your progress in two ways once you've started your travels.
Any time you control your character, press the Start button to pause the game. Then, press the button to choose "save and quit" or "continue".
Game Over
If you die without mushrooms to restore your life, the "Game Over" screen will appear. You can choose to: "save and continue", "save and quit", or "continue without saving".
If you select a save option with a Memory Card in Slot 1, the game will save your progress. However, it will only save from the beginning of the last dungeon, cave, or house you entered.
You can keep as many Monkey Hero save games on your Memory Card as there are available blocks. To make room for more saves, use the console's internal MEMORY CARD manager to delete blocks.
Options at Your Disposal
Before starting your journey, you may want to change some game options. Access the "Options" room by moving through the right-hand door in the "Title Room", marked "OPTIONS".
Audio
In this room, adjust music and sound effect levels. Move the hero next to a slider and push it left to lower or right to raise the level.
Control
Choose from four preset controller configurations in this room. Press the directional buttons left and right to select a configuration. Press to make your selection and return to the "OPTIONS" room.
Controls will always default upon resetting or turning off the PlayStation game console. You must change them each time if you prefer a different configuration. Monkey Moves
You will travel and explore many areas across three worlds, facing various puzzles and situations. Refer back to these pages for a refresher on actions you may need.
Moving Around the Screen
Use the Directional buttons to move in any direction. You must be close to an object to interact with it.
Pushing Objects
To push objects, move next to the desired object. When close enough, press the Directional Buttons in the desired direction. You will lean against the object and push or slide it. Stop pushing by stopping movement or moving in the opposite direction.
Pulling Objects
To pull an object, move next to it and press and hold the button. Then, pull it in the direction you press the Directional buttons. Not all objects can be pushed or pulled; experiment to find what fits the situation.
Picking Up and Throwing Objects
To pick up an object like a plant, move next to it and press the button to lift it. While carrying, you can move with the Directional buttons. To throw, press the button again. You will throw in the direction you are facing.
Opening Chests
There are small and large chests. To open a small chest, move next to it and press the button. The item will automatically go into your inventory.
Large chests open the same way, but require a gold key in your inventory.
Conversation
To talk to a character, move next to them and press the button. Press the button again to continue and end the conversation.
Hovering Technique
Once you find the "Hover Scroll", you can use your staff to hover over chasms. Your hovering power depends on the staff you are using. Perform this maneuver by holding the button until the staff charges. When fully charged, you will twirl the staff, creating lift. Control your hover direction with the Directional buttons.
Staff Attack
Your standard attack. Once you find a staff, press the button to swing it in front of you. Practice the correct distance to hit enemies.
While your main attack is with your staff, other objects in the world may be useful as weapons. Experiment with them.
Staying Alive
To defeat the Nightmare King, you must stay in good shape.
Your health is shown with peaches at the top of the Action screen. Taking damage loses a half or whole peach. If you run out of peaches and have no mushrooms, you die. •
Restores one peach of life.
•
Automatically used when picked up.
•
Adds one to your maximum.
•
Restore all life if you lose all peaches.
