The gameplay is mostly similar to its predecessor, with most game modes and mini-games remaining unchanged. A new rivalry system has been introduced, where statistical bonuses and takeaways are created depending on how players play in games against their rival teams. However, some improvements made for the Xbox 360 version of the game, such as a "cinematic" presentation system, are not included.

Players can also use shadowing to put pressure on opponents, which allows them to increase their chance of making a mistake. This is achieved by holding the left bumper and steering the right control stick towards another player, with the amount of pressure determined through taps.
