Samurai Shodown V returns after seven years, taking place in 1786 from January through the summer. This game is considered a prequel to the series due to its earlier release date within the timeframe of the games' chronology. In this period, the story unfolds with a focus on revenge and redemption.
The gameplay has undergone changes compared to previous titles. The Slash/Bust system has been removed, and each character now features only one version or the Bust mode is replaced by a similar setup for new characters. The removal of combo slashes, sidestepping, and fatalities results in a more straightforward combat experience. The basic moves have been simplified to three types of slashes, a single kick, and various dodge maneuvers.
Players can choose from 24 characters, both old and new faces in the series. A notable change is that it is no longer possible to kill your opponent in this game.
