Sonic Riders takes place when Dr. Eggman challenges Sonic and his friends to a Worldwide Grand Prix, where the winner will get an ultra-rare Chaos Emerald. Gliding on air boards – which work differently for each playable character – gamers experience a heightened sense of sports-style racing tension as they perform tricks and stunts over wide-open terrain.
Players control Sonic Riders ' characters who speed through tracks on air boards, using individual special moves to knock down opponents. Air plays a big role in the game. The character's board needs fuel from air, which can be refilled at various points on the course. However, to do well, players must use another source of replenishment: performing tricks with their board. They also need to take advantage of turbulence generated by other riders ahead.

Game Guide
Extracted from the original game manual
This is a racing game where players, as Sonic and friends, compete in the "EX World Grand Prix" on Extreme Gear airboards. The goal is to recover a stolen Chaos Emerald and uncover Dr. Eggman's true intentions.
Story
Story
At midnight in Metal City, Sonic and friends found a valuable Chaos Emerald. As they admired it, a mysterious trio on floating Extreme Gear airboards appeared and snatched the gem.
As the thieves raced away, one dropped their airboard. Sonic jumped aboard to pursue them, but unaccustomed to riding, he lost his footing and they escaped.
Later, in Metal City Plaza, Sonic and friends were interrupted by Dr. Eggman on a giant building monitor. He announced the "EX World Grand Prix," a tournament to find the best Extreme Gear riders.
Sonic groaned, wondering what Eggman was planning. At that moment, the three Chaos Emerald thieves appeared as top entrants on the monitor.
Sonic's attitude changed. "The EX World Grand Prix, huh? Let's do this!" Sonic's mind was made up. But what was Eggman really planning, and who were the three mysterious characters?
