Last Action Hero

Gameplay involves controlling Slater as he navigates through various levels, fighting against enemies such as those armed with guns or baseball bats. Players can defeat these foes using punches or roundhouse kicks. Special items are available throughout the game, which can be obtained by collecting movie tickets flying in the air. These items include fire extinguishers, keys, bombs, and rockets.

Two of the game's levels feature driving-based gameplay, where players control Slater's car from a top-down perspective. To reach the level end, a turbo boost must be acquired, which can be done by collecting movie tickets or ramming other cars to collect them from the wreckage. The Game Gear version includes a unique "chicken" mini-game, recreating a scene from the film where Slater and the bad guy's car face off.
