John Blacksad, a New York black cat P.I. in early years after World War II, is approached by a purr-fect feline dame named Sonia, who has a sad expression on her face. She's accompanied by Jake Ostiombe, her heavy category bodyguard gorilla. Sonia tells Blacksad that her father, Joe Dunn, an owner of a boxing gym, has been found dead in the middle of his boxing ring by the maid, Mary Purnell. The police suspect it was a suicide, but Blacksad isn't convinced after only a few looks around the murder scene.
The game follows Blacksad as he delves into a complex web of conspiracies involving drugs, blackmails, money, and hired guns. With his sharp instincts and determination, Blacksad must navigate through the dark underworld to uncover the truth behind Joe Dunn's death.
Blacksad: Under the Skin is played entirely in third-person perspective, with an action-camera that follows the character but changes angles to give it a more cinematic feel. The player is often limited to exploring what the camera shows, and must use small movements to find hidden items such as sports album stickers.
The gameplay involves exploration, investigation, and interaction with objects and characters. Players can choose their reactions during dialogues, which affects Blacksad's character stats and the story outcome. There are eight different stats that players can track, including Lonesome vs Romantic and Upright vs Pragmatic.
One notable feature of the game is the lack of an inventory system. Instead, items that Blacksad picks up are carried with him at all times and used automatically when needed. Players must also manage Blacksad's notebook, where he writes down information about suspects and leads to further investigation.
Blacksad: Under the Skin is a new story based on the comic book series, offering an original experience that deviates from existing game adaptations.
