Nobunaga's Ambition is a turn-based strategy game set in 16th century Japan during its Sengoku period. Players take on the role of daimyos, such as Nobunaga Oda, aiming to conquer Japan and become the Shogun. The game features multiple scenarios, including 17 regions and 50, each with varying degrees of difficulty.
Gameplay involves selecting a daimyo, rating their attributes in categories such as Age, Health, Ambition, Luck, Charm, and IQ. As the game progresses, these values change based on events unfolding. The player must manage these changes to succeed. Each turn represents one season, and players can issue commands from a menu, including recruiting soldiers, training the army, buying weapons, and forming alliances.
Battles are fought in an overhead-view hex battle map, where each side takes turns moving units and issuing orders like attack, move, bribe, or surrender. The goal is to defeat all enemy units or force them into surrender. Army units have weaknesses against different types of enemies and are affected by terrain.
