Shovel Knight is set in ancient medieval times, where lords and heroes reign supreme. Shovel Knight and Shield Knight were once an unstoppable duo, but tragedy struck when they fought against foes in the Tower of Fate. Shovel Knight fell in battle and, upon awakening, discovered that his friend Shield Knight was gone. The loss shattered Shield Knight's spirit, causing him to retreat into solitude. However, when he heard that the Tower of Fate had been taken over by an evil sorcerer known as The Enchantress, he knew he had to act once more.

Shovel Knight is an action platformer where you play as Shovel Knight, a legendary hero adhering to the "Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!" code. This game draws inspiration from classic titles like Mega Man and Castlevania, combining combat and platforming elements. The game's mechanics are reminiscent of Disney's DuckTales.

Gold is abundant in Shovel Knight , but acquiring it requires effort to purchase various items. These include Relics, which aid in combat and navigation for magic points; health and magic point upgrades; and different armor sets with unique effects. The player can also destroy checkpoints to earn extra gold.

Gameplay involves exploring the world, fighting enemies, and solving puzzles while collecting treasure and defeating bosses.
