Crazy Taxi is an arcade-like racer where you play as a taxi driver, navigating through crowded streets, sidewalks, and even underwater to deliver passengers on time. The courses are set inside cities with traffic and pedestrians that can't be run over. Your goal is to pick up as many customers as possible and get them to their destination within the time limit. Customers are marked by circles, and their color indicates the distance and fare they offer.
In the main Arcade mode, a timer runs down quickly. You can replenish it by picking up customers, and reckless driving is encouraged. Players can ignore traffic rules and earn extra tips for fast and dangerous driving. However, these tips only count if you arrive at your destination on time. The reward at the end of each ride depends on how much time is left, with each customer having their own timer. The city has slopes, jumps, and a loose driving model. Since no damage can be done to the car, fast driving is key.
Besides Arcade mode, there's Original mode and Crazy Box where you must meet specific goals on closed courses. In regular modes, you can play for a set amount of minutes without the timer. Your performance at the end of each race determines your license level, from D to A, with S for exceptional driving. The game features interactive arcade tracks and a new course specifically designed for home consoles. You can choose from four cabs and drivers, each with unique stats and attitudes. The soundtrack includes songs by The Offspring and Bad Religion.
