Bubble Bobble tells the story of two humans, Bub and Bob, who enter a mysterious cave filled with monsters. After transforming into dinosaurs, they must reach the end of the cave to return to their human form.
Bubble Bobble is a platform game where each level takes place on a single screen. The player controls one character while the other controls Bob, and together they can jump, collect items for points, and blow bubbles to trap enemies. Bubbles can be used as platforms or to capture enemies, which must then be popped by jumping into them to turn them into fruit. Power-ups also float through bubbles, such as lightning that destroys enemies horizontally or water that pulls the player and enemies down.
The game features Baron Von Blubba, a character who appears if the player takes too long to complete a level, trying to destroy them. The NES version has additional stages, bringing the total number of stages to 112, while the Sharp X68000 version includes a hidden minigame called Sybubblun, featuring 20 original difficult levels with a Syvalion theme.
