Bass Masters Classic is set in a world where five 3-day tournaments take place at four lakes. The goal is to catch as many large bass as possible. After each day of the tournament, the player's largest bass catches are weighed and compared with those of other fishermen. The person with the heaviest catch wins.

Bass Masters Classic starts with a choice of angler. Players can then choose to visit the bait shop, practice pond, or start in the tournament. In the bait shop, players can buy different baits, lines, rods, reels, fish finders, and boat engines. The practice pond mode is an opportunity to get familiar with the game mechanics without any consequences.

The main part of the game is the tournament mode. Players begin in a fishing boat and must consider factors such as temperature, wind speed, water clarity, and time of day when casting their line. After catching a fish, the game switches to a side view of the lake's water depths, and it's up to the player to attract the fish with the chosen bait.
