Red Zone is a helicopter action shooter where you pilot an AH-64B Apache into enemy territory to stop a nuclear armed dictator. The dictator has begun to annex neighboring countries and plans to continue his territorial expansion. Three special operatives are sent in with a lone gunship to remove the dictator's ability to wage war.
The majority of the game consists of air-to-ground attack while flying in the Apache, using its loadout of rockets, guided missiles, and 30 mm cannon to eliminate hostiles from the air, land, and sea. Fuel drums, repair kits, and ammunition depletion are factors to keep in mind, requiring careful planning to keep the chopper airborne and fighting.
In addition to in-chopper combat, there are mission-oriented sequences where the helicopter occupants disembark and perform on-foot missions inside buildings. Each character has a unique set of weapons, and the player can choose from three characters, as long as none have been killed during previous on-foot missions.
Red Zone shares gameplay similarities with the early Strike series games, although it features a straight-down point-of-view that rotates with the helicopter. The game is also similar to Sub-Terrania in terms of its relative difficulty and use of the Genesis hardware to provide visual effects like simulated video.
