Red Zone is a helicopter action shooter where you pilot an AH-64B Apache into enemy territory to stop a nuclear armed dictator's plans. The dictator has begun to annex neighboring countries under threat of global nuclear war, and three special operatives are sent in with a lone gunship to remove his ability to wage war.
The game consists mainly of air-to-ground attack while flying the Apache, using its loadout of rockets, guided missiles, 30 mm cannon, and defensive infrared air-to-air missiles to eliminate hostiles from the air, land, and sea. Fuel drums, repair kits, and ammunition depletion are factors to keep in mind, requiring careful planning for pickups to ensure the chopper stays in the air and continues fighting.
Between in-chopper combat, there are mission-oriented sequences where the helicopter occupants disembark and perform on-foot missions inside buildings. Each of the three characters has a unique set of weapons, and the player can choose from any of them, as long as none have been killed during previous on-foot missions.
Red Zone shares gameplay similarities with the early Strike series, although it features a straight-down point-of-view that rotates along with the helicopter. It is also reminiscent of Zyrinx's Sub-Terrania , sharing similarities in difficulty and using the Genesis hardware to provide visual effects like simulated video.
