The story follows Radoria, Estan, and Cirrus, three powerful magic-wielders from the ancient kingdom of Fargasta. After defeating the Black Dragon Vlag, they are granted immortality, but soon descend into madness. Radoria's power grows, leading him to become the "Immortal Emperor" who seeks to impose his will on the land. The siblings' fate is sealed when Cirrus transforms into the Holy Sword of Eldean, allowing Estan to deliver a fatal blow to Radoria.
The game takes place generations later, where a young boy named Pike lives in the Harpy Village. After his parents are murdered, he is taken in by Laia, a harpy who finds him after his parents' demise. The village is attacked by Belnard, a dark dragon-mounted warrior, and Laia is petrified. Pike sets out on a quest to save Laia and his home, gathering allies along the way to stop Belnard's evil plans.
Players control Pike as he travels through the land, exploring towns, dungeons, and battling enemies in menu-driven combat. The player can manage their party's inventory, equipment, and status, while navigating random encounters and battles. Magic and skills play a crucial role in combat, with characters utilizing MP to perform special attacks. The game features a turn-based system, with options for each character to attack, use magic, or defend.
Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean is a standard Japanese-style Turn-Based RPG, visually reminiscent of classic top-down 16-bit SNES games but with enhanced graphics and CD-quality audio. The soundtrack is thoroughly composed, with occasional voiceovers in the opening intro. Each character gains experience and levels up independently, with stats gained and spells learned automatically with progression.
The game is split into two chapters, with a new plot thread introduced in the second chapter. Legend of Eldean is part of the Albert Odyssey series, which has previous Japan-only releases on SNES. The translation team at Working Designs brought many pop culture references, 4th wall-breaking allusions, and humorous punchlines to the game, setting it apart from other fantasy RPGs.
