Jimmy Houston's Bass Tournament U.S.A. is a sports game that simulates the sport of bass fishing. It offers both a practice and a tournament mode. In the tournament mode , players have to reel in some large bass, then have up to five of their largest catches weighed. Competitors are ranked by whoever brought in the heaviest haul and the player must at least rank the third heaviest during the weigh-in in order to move on to the next stage of the tournament .
Practice mode lets the player fish without all the pressures of the tournament . Players can choose from one of four different U.S. lakes, with each lake having multiple spots to fish at. Players also have the option to select what month they want to fish in and pick from six different weather conditions.
When out on the lake, players direct their boat to a spot where they want to cast their line. Players can also choose what lures and tackles they want to use. Then players have to use a meter that gauges how strong the line will be cast out. At that point, players finally get their chance to catch some big bass.
The game features Shimano brand rods and reels and also contains advice from the champion angler Jimmy Houston.

THE TOURNAMENT LAKES
Features area maps of Lake Fork, Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Seminole, and Lake Santee Cooper with Jimmy Houston's chosen fishing spots and record weights.
QUITTING FOR THE DAY
Explains how to save and reload your game during tournament play to avoid losing progress by accessing the System menu from the Pre-Cast Mode.
NAME ENTRY
Allows you to enter your name using the Control Pad and A button, defaulting to 'PLAYER' if skipped.
SYSTEM
A screen that allows players to save and load games, review top records, and adjust background music.
SAVE AND LOAD
Allows you to save your current game to one of seven files and load it later to resume progress.
SECRET TIP
Recommends saving your game after placing 3rd or higher in each tournament lake to avoid starting the tournament over if you fail a subsequent lake.
TOP RECORD
A screen that displays your top six bass caught from previous weigh-ins.
SOUND
Allows you to select stereo or monaural sound and preview the game's background music.
How to Play
Starting the Game
Turn on the Power, Press "START" and choose:

I. TOURNAMENT: Choose to Begin or Continue the "Sammy Classic Tournament"

II. PRACTICE: Choose to Practice your skills in preparation for the "Tournament"
•
III. NAME ENTRY: Choose to enter your Name
•
IV. SYSTEM: Choose to Save a game, Reload a previous game, or Check Background Music

Tournament Mode
The tournament has 3 preliminary stages (the "Trail") before you progress to the final stage (the "Classic".)
The Tournament starts each day at 07:00 Hours (7:00 AM). You must weigh in before 16:00 Hours (4:00 PM) or you will be disqualified and the game is over.
The Sammy Classic Trail
•
STAGE I: LAKE FORK (Texas) - One Day
•
STAGE II: LAKE WINNIPESAUKEE (New Hampshire) - One Day
•
STAGE III: LAKE SEMINOLE (Georgia) - Two Days
•
STAGE IV: LAKE SANTEE COOPER (South Carolina) - Three Days (Sammy Classic)
Tournament Starting Procedures
•
Use Control Pad & "A" Button to select Name Entry and record your name.
•
Use Control Pad & "A" Button to start "Tournament".
•
Press "A" Button to change instruction screens and the "Tournament" will start.
Follow procedures under "Save and Load" during "Tournament" play to avoid restarting the tournament from the beginning.
Tournament Rules
•
You must bring in a least 1 Bass that is 12 inches or over. Any Bass less than 12 inches should be released.
•
Ranking will be determined from 5 fish total weight. You are allowed to catch up to 6 Bass, however you must release 1 before going to weigh in (usually the smallest.)
•
Release the smallest weight or the fish with the weakest life line. The life line is indicated under each fish in the livewell. "Red" indicates a fish that will soon die.
•
The fish must be alive in the livewell or you will receive a 4 oz. penalty for each dead fish.
•
If you cannot achieve 3rd place or higher in Stages I, II or III, you are disqualified and the game is over.
Practice Mode
There is no ranking or competition in this mode. The practice mode allows you to move from lake to lake and fishing spot to fishing spot to help you improve your fishing skills for tournament play.
At the end of this manual is "My Fishing Log" detailing all 4 lakes and all the fishing spots on the lakes. Practice on every lake; practice in every spot; take careful notes; because, when it comes time for the "Tournament" those notes will guide you to Victory!
Practice Starting Procedures
•
Use Control Pad & "A" Button to select "Name Entry" and record your name.
•
Use Control Pad & "A" Button to start "Practice".
•
Press "A" Button to change instruction screens.
•
One Rule: If you pass 19:00 Hours (7:00 PM), you will automatically go to the weigh-in screen.
Setting Options for Practice Mode
The following options are available to teach you the skills during practice mode in preparation for "The Sammy Classic Tournament."
•
LAKE: Use Control Pad & "A" Button to select practice lake.
•
MONTH: Use Control Pad & "A" Button to select month of the year.
•
WEATHER: Use Control Pad & "A" Button to select weather conditions.
In Practice Mode you will be able to choose from the 4 lakes and 12 months. However, since these are real lakes and real conditions apply, you may not always be able to select a month for that lake if you normally could not fish on that lake during that month.
For example, you can choose Lake Winnipesaukee, but you cannot fish this lake in January, February, March, November or December, since normally the lake is covered with ice.
You can choose any lake; however, you may not be able to choose all weather conditions. If you choose Lake Fork, Lake Seminole or Lake Santee Cooper, you cannot choose Snow since these are in states which usually do not have snow. Lake Winnipesaukee can have snow in April or November.
•
WIND: Use Control Pad to move to "Month" title then use ⇒ on Control Pad to move to Wind title. Use "A" Button to select. Use Control Pad to increase/decrease wind speed & wind direction. Use "A" Button to execute.
•
TIME: Use Control Pad to move to "Lake" title then use ⇒ on Control Pad to move to Time title. Use "A" Button to select. Use Control Pad to increase/decrease the time of day. Use "A" Button to execute.
Water Temperature, Weather Temperature and Water Quality will be automatically decided based on the chosen lake, month and weather conditions as they would apply to the actual lake.
