Dig Dug is a 1-2 player arcade game where you dig your way through the earth with a shovel. Pooka and Fygar monsters chase you around, trying to stop you. The only weapon you have is an air pump that can inflate them until they explode.
The earth also has rocks scattered throughout it that you can use to squash. If the monsters don't find you for a few seconds, they turn into ghosts and become invincible. These ghostly monsters can walk through the earth without being harmed. Occasionally, vegetables appear in the center of the screen, giving you points if you collect them.
