Dig Dug is a 1-2 player arcade game where you use your shovel to dig through the earth. Stopping you from doing this are two monsters, Pooka and Fygar, who will continually chase you around. The only weapon you carry is an air pump, which you can use to inflate the monsters to make them explode. You also have rocks that you can use to squash them. If the monsters don't find you for several seconds, they will become ghosts that can walk through the earth.
The gameplay involves using your shovel and air pump to navigate the levels and defeat the enemies. As you progress through the game, new challenges and obstacles are introduced, such as more powerful versions of Pooka and Fygar. The game also features vegetables that appear in the center of the screen, which can be collected for points.
