Murdered: Soul Suspect is a third-person adventure game with minor action and stealth elements. The game is set in Salem, Massachusetts (USA) and follows the story of detective Ronan O'Connor, who dies under mysterious circumstances after being shot by a serial killer known as the Bell Killer. Instead of passing away, he turns into a ghost and meets his long dead wife Julia, who guides him through the process of finding his killer and resolving an unresolved issue from his life.
The gameplay is linear in nature, with O'Connor needing to collect clues to progress through the story. Players can explore the open world environment freely, but are restricted by obstacles that only exist in the spirit world. Clues are collected through a puzzle-solving system, where players must answer questions about the scene to unlock new locations and progress through the story. The game also features stealth mechanics, such as possessing people or animals to access certain areas, and interacting with the environment using various powers.
The player is aided in their investigation by Joy, a teenage medium who explains the world to O'Connor and often acts as a sarcastic sidekick. Together, they must work through encounters with demons that roam various locations, using stealth actions to evade detection. As O'Connor learns new abilities throughout the game, such as teleportation and telekinesis, players can access new areas and uncover more clues.
Throughout the game, there are 242 optional collectibles to collect, including nine sets of artifacts and eight sets of ghost stories. Players must work to complete these challenges, which add an extra layer of replay value to the game.
Murdered: Soul Suspect was released on Xbox 360 in June 2014.
