The 2012 edition of NCAA Football 13 brings several enhancements and improvements to the gameplay, including over 400 new catches and pass animations, reduced blind swats, and the ability to abort the play after the snap. When hiking the ball, one of the 20 new dropbacks is used, and if going too far, the pocket breaks. For passes, button icons now show the awareness of receivers, such as in gray when they are still on their way or not looking. There are also return kicks and punts.
The Road to Glory career mode returns, allowing players to start with a custom player or coach in high school. Players progress through colleges, and coaches can accept or decline offers, starting out as an offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, or head coach. The online options allow for new high schools to be added, with customizable names, teams, colors, and stadiums. Matches feature studio scorecard updates, an ESPN ticker at the bottom of the screen, and sideline reports.
The quick play game modes include exhibition, practice, coaching a game, mascot mash up, and button mode. In career modes, there is an online Dynasty mode (single-player or multiplayer) next to Road to Glory. The Heisman Challenge is a new addition, where players select one of ten former Heisman winners and control them on their real team at the time. Different from Road to Glory is a list of goals shown in the top-right corner of the screen, which must be achieved to win this mode.
