The NCAA Football 13 series offers several enhancements and improvements to its gameplay. There are over 400 new catches and pass animations, fewer instances of blind swats, and the ability to abort the play after the snap. When hiking the ball, one of the 20 new dropbacks is used, and if going too far, the pocket is broken. For passes, button icons now show the awareness of receivers, with gray indicating they are still on their way or not looking. New pass trajectory zones have been added, offering more options compared to the previous edition. There are also return kicks and punts in the game.
The Road to Glory career mode returns, allowing players to start with a custom new player or coach in high school. Players progress through colleges, and coaches can accept or decline offers, starting out as an offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, or head coach. Online options allow for customization of high schools, teams, colors, and stadiums. In matches, studio scorecard updates, an ESPN ticker at the bottom of the screen, and sideline voices are available. Three new NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams have been added: Massachusetts (UMass), Texas–San Antonio (UTSA), and Texas State. The game also incorporates some rule changes for the 2012-2013 season.
Quick play game modes include exhibition, practice, coach a game, mascot mash up, and button mode. In career modes, an online Dynasty mode is available, along with Road to Glory. A new feature, Heisman Challenge, allows players to select one of ten former Heisman winners and control them on their real team. This mode includes a list of goals shown in the top-right corner of the screen. Completing challenges unlocks the player in any game mode, including Road to Glory, and allows for transfer to NFL 13's Superstar mode. Exporting draft classes to Madden NFL was removed from this version.
