The China Syndrome game is about stopping a nuclear meltdown on Spectra Island. An earthquake has damaged the reactor, causing it to release radioactive particles. You must use a robot arm to retrieve these particles before they build up too much and cause a disaster.
The gameplay involves moving the robot arm to intercept falling particles, which are coloured red, blue, and yellow across three sections of the screen. You start with one particle in each area, and you need to push the fire button to grasp them when they reach the robot arm. However, if you delay too long, the particles will split as they bounce around, increasing the radiation level.
The goal is to clear level nine without losing all your robot arms. If you succeed, you save the day; otherwise, the reactor enters meltdown and you lose. In later levels, you also need to avoid hitting circulating fans, which can destroy your remaining arms.
