Policenauts takes place in 2010 when humanity has established its first space colony, Beyond Coast. The colony's founders choose five top policemen from Earth to protect it: Gates Becker from Scotland Yard, Sadaoki Tokugawa from Japan, Salvatore Toscanini from New York, and two Los Angeles detectives: Jonathan Ingram and his friend Ed Brown. During a routine patrol, Jonathan is sucked into space and presumed dead. 25 years later, he is discovered alive in his life pod.

Twenty-five years have passed since Jonathan's disappearance. He now tries to forget his past by opening an investigation agency on Earth. His ex-wife visits him one day, asking for help finding her missing husband. Her car explodes and she dies shortly after. Determined to fulfill her last request, Jonathan prepares to return to Beyond Coast.

Policenauts is a Japanese-style adventure game with action elements, similar to Snatcher . The player interacts with the environment by positioning a cursor over objects, allowing for examination or other context-dependent actions. Conversations usually include selecting topics and have a limited number of options.

The gameplay involves visiting locations, examining objects, talking to characters, and solving some puzzles. Action sequences are similar to those in Snatcher , but with more frequent and varied encounters. The player must rapidly shoot enemies while reloading their gun manually, trying to eliminate them before Jonathan's health bar is depleted.
