King's Field III is a prologue scenario set 10 years before the events of its sequel. The player controls Lord Silviera, who returns to find his garrison overrun and all his soldiers killed, and must recover the stolen Moonlight Sword.
The gameplay is largely identical to other King's Field games, with one major difference: there is no saving feature, which means death only sets the player back to a specific location. The game takes less than an hour to finish, and upon completion, a trailer for the game plays.
King's Field III was given away at the 1996 Tokyo Game Show to promote its Japanese release, featuring a unique scenario not found in the retail version. This limited edition game offers a different experience from other King's Field titles, with no saving feature and a shorter playtime.
