Rebellion Developments Ltd. was established in Oxford, England, by brothers Jason and Chris Kingsley. The studio gained early recognition with the release of Alien vs. Predator for the Atari Jaguar in 1994. Over the decades, they have developed numerous titles across multiple platforms and expanded into comic book publishing.
Following its initial 1990s projects, the developer diversified its portfolio by working across various platforms and genres. The studio released the racing game
Checkered Flag in 1994, followed by the PlayStation action game
One in 1997, which saw further releases in 1998. During this period, they also developed the hack-and-slash title
Legend in 1998. By the end of the decade, the company handled high-profile ports and original handheld titles, including the PlayStation adaptation of Tom Clancy's
Rainbow Six and the puzzle game
Klustar, both released in 1999.
In the 2000s, the studio established its signature tactical shooter gameplay with the launch of the
Sniper Elite franchise in 2005, which became its flagship property. To support its independent development pipeline, the company created the proprietary Asura game engine, a toolset used to power the majority of its subsequent cross-platform releases. Through strategic acquisitions of older software houses and intellectual properties, the developer has maintained a steady output of both original intellectual properties and licensed adaptations.
