Playmates Interactive Entertainment Inc. was the interactive media branch of toy manufacturer Playmates Toys. The publisher is highly notable for releasing Shiny Entertainment's acclaimed run-and-gun platformer Earthworm Jim in 1994, as well as publishing the Game Boy port of the fighting game World Heroes 2 Jet in 1995.
Following the initial release of
Earthworm Jim in 1994, the publisher maximized the franchise's reach by distributing the game across a wide array of platforms. This included the standard Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System versions, alongside the collectible
Earthworm Jim [Cardboard Box] retail edition. In 1995, the company sustained this momentum by publishing handheld ports of
Earthworm Jim for the Game Boy and Sega Game Gear, as well as the expanded
Earthworm Jim Special Edition for the Sega CD.
Simultaneously, the company diversified its catalog by partnering with Japanese developer Takara to bring prominent fighting game franchises to Western audiences. Following the 1995 release of
World Heroes 2 Jet, the publisher became instrumental in distributing the
Battle Arena Toshinden franchise. They handled the North American localization and publishing of
Battle Arena Toshinden for the Sega Saturn and PC, helping establish the 3D fighting series as a landmark title of the early 32-bit console era. Through these strategic releases, the publisher bridged the gap between toy-line licensing and mainstream mid-1990s interactive entertainment.
