Sonic and his friends are once again caught up in Dr. Robotnik's schemes. This time, he aims to harness the power of Chaos, a malevolent being that feeds on the energy of the Chaos Emeralds. In their own way, five heroes will work together to save Station Square and possibly the world.
The player can choose from one of five characters to play as after meeting them with Sonic. Each character has unique levels to complete. Sonic's levels are all about racing through a level as fast as possible, destroying robots along the way. Tails' levels involve hovering over long distances and must beat an opponent to the finish line to win. Amy can't charge up ramps or run quickly like Sonic and Tails, but she has a giant hammer to break obstacles with. Her goal is to avoid being caught by a robot sent after her by Dr. Robotnik. E102 Gamma is a difficult-to-manoeuvre robot that fires guns and missiles at targets, making it harder to complete levels. Big the Cat's levels are more relaxed, as he simply fishes for his lost frog. Each character can find items that improve their abilities as the story progresses.
Players can also visit the Chao garden with each character, where they can raise baby Chaos and watch them grow stronger by petting and feeding them. By completing objectives in each level, players can collect extra emblems, although these don't have any special effects in this version of the game. In the past, players could download additional levels and bonuses online using SegaNet, but this feature is no longer available.
