The world of Algol was once a peaceful one, with three planets - Palma, Motavia, and Dezolis - living in harmony under the light of their star. However, disaster struck when Palma exploded, wiping out ninety per cent of the population and leaving Motavia on the brink of collapse. The Darkness spread its influence, threatening to consume the remaining planets.
A thousand years have passed since the catastrophe, and life has slowly begun to return to Motavia. The Hunter's Guild plays a crucial role in maintaining balance, but a malevolent force thought to be long defeated is now stirring once again. Young hunter Chaz must embark on an epic quest, starting with a routine mission that will set him on a path of discovery.
Phantasy Star IV is a traditional RPG experience, featuring top-down exploration, random encounters, and turn-based combat. The game's design draws inspiration from earlier installments in the series, including the ability to equip two weapons simultaneously and a range of techniques that can be used in battle.
The gameplay is similar to Phantasy Star II , with players able to control up to five party members at once. Characters can level up and learn new abilities automatically, although android characters require special chests to discover their powers. Each character has unique attacks and techniques that can be combined for powerful effects.
Players can also choose to use macro command sets to streamline combat, or execute complex combination attacks by merging different techs or special moves. Vehicle combat segments provide a change of pace, while side quests offer opportunities for Chaz and his friends to take on new challenges.
The game features an innovative "party talk" feature, displaying conversations between characters in a unique manga-style format. Cutscenes are presented using comic book-style panels, adding to the game's distinctive atmosphere.
