Grand Theft Auto , released in 1999, follows the journey of a small-time criminal as they strive to rise through the ranks of the mob. The player must engage in various illicit activities such as stealing cars and completing jobs for gangsters to achieve success. The game is set across six levels spread across three cities: Liberty City (based on New York City), San Andreas (based on San Francisco), and Vice City (based on Miami). To complete a level, the player must reach a certain score. This can be achieved by engaging in reckless driving, crashing into traffic, or killing pedestrians, as well as completing jobs such as answering phones or entering special cars. However, the player's actions come with consequences. If police witness a crime, the wanted level increases, and the player must evade capture. The level of pursuit depends on the level of notoriety, ranging from single police car chases to full squads of officers. The only way to escape is by visiting a respray shop and acquiring a new paint job with new license plates.
The gameplay offers a top-down perspective, allowing for a bird's-eye view of the city while driving at high speeds. The cities are expansive and can be freely explored, with scattered crates containing various items such as weapons, armor, extra lives, police bribes, or get-out-of-jail-free cards.
The game features a wide range of vehicles, each with unique characteristics, allowing for diverse playstyles. With the player's multiple lives, even death or arrest does not spell disaster, merely reducing the score multiplier and requiring a strategic retreat to avoid capture.
