R-Type is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up game known for its challenging and strategic gameplay. You control the R-9 spaceship as it attempts to stop the evil Bydo empire.
The R-9 comes with a small gun that can take down small enemies, but holding down the fire button allows you to load up and release a large burst of energy, eliminating stronger enemies. Upgrades are obtained from pods that come flying towards your ship, releasing items like "The Force", which can be used for protection or offense.
Mastering "The Force" is crucial to surviving in R-Type , as it must be used for both defense and attack. The game's levels are designed in an organic style inspired by H. R. Giger's Alien artwork, with stages that require strategy and reflexes to navigate.
The game features different gun types, each with its own purpose, such as the blue laser beam shooter for tunnels or the yellow artillery emplacement shooter. The gameplay is challenging, but rewarding for those who master it.
