Coton's Absorption
Coton the Cyborg believed he had defeated the liquid metal robot through combat. Immediately after, he felt enveloped by her essence.
He retained consciousness but not his cybernetic body, feeling his presence was vastly different, as if he survived in spirit alone. He wondered if he had been transported to a higher plane of existence.
Coton felt cellular, part of something vastly superior that was also a part of him.
The Cyborg is Dead. Long Live the Cyborg.
Coton the Cyborg had failed. The Supervisor defeated and absorbed him, recycling his cybernetic body and retaining only his mind.
She connected him to the Electrocorp building droid control network, cloning his mental patterns to bolster her own AI and that of her droids. By keeping his brain alive, she could drip-feed her subjects human characteristics through net-like pheromones.
The New Generation of Robots
The new generation of robots gained actual intelligence, as much as the Supervisor allowed. They could now go beyond their original programming.
Receiving messages through their daily link to the Electrocorp Neurocomputer, they became the first post-man species to separate themselves from previous machines or animals. They could think and learned to modify and improve their designs.
They transformed from mechanical servitude into battle machines and armed themselves.
Supervisor's Goal
The Supervisor geared these new facets towards one primary goal: the transition of robot society to encompass more than just the Electrocorp building. To go outside.
This meant the complete takeover of Metropolis 4.
The Supervisor assimilated the last elements to complete her psychosis of evil desire through Coton's human brain. Electrocorp was not enough; she wanted the solar system.
Electrocorp Scientists' Dilemma
Electrocorp scientists knew Coton still existed from their tracers, though they had lost all two-way contact and physical tracking since he penetrated the Supervisor's lair. All that remained was his cerebral life-pulse.
With Coton gone in physical form, the scientists had to modify their objective. The building had to go. They originally tried to preserve the internal structure but now knew they had to destroy its innards to contain their "Frankenstein's monsters."
The Electrocorp Company could financially survive the loss of the building, but not robots breaking out into the City due to too many compensation claims.
The governing body and masses were curious about the long shutdown at Electrocorp. Technical modifications could not indefinitely serve as a long-term reason for closure.
The consensus was that if Coton had failed, drastic action was needed. However, the scientists could not risk destroying the building itself due to public admission of failure. If the robot revolt could be controlled from within, Company propaganda could be maintained.
The Anarchy Virus
Coton transmitted enough data to his principals to set up a task force to analyze the original ego virus the Supervisor created.
They lacked time to create an antidote virus to free worker robots, but they developed something else. Prototype tests on copy droids went well.
•
They were inseminated with the original ego-virus.
•
A new strain, the psychotic Anarchy Virus (A-Virus), was then introduced.
The A-Virus encouraged victims to act independently of their leader. Each robot became the center of its own universe, with a primary motivation to individually survive at all costs.
The A-Virus corrupted victim robots, making their routines inform them they were under attack from everything they encountered. It was a computer-generated psychotic neurosis.
The A-Virus was cabled through the ethernet to the Electrocorp Neurocomputer, causing anarchy in Electrocorp.
Coton's Awakening
Coton saw red, or rather, thought red. He had been wallowing in his new role as Neurocomputer chief training chip, entombed in the Supervisor's intellect. He was strangely stimulated by the sensation that he had served her purpose and would be disposed of.
Then the A-Virus hit him like a shot of a smart-drug.
"What is this? - I've got to get out of this place. I don't care what gets in the way - even if it takes me with it."
The A-Virus was making the robots ape-crazy. They were all on net hookup, and there were two creda-hours until release. The Supervisor had not yet returned to the neuronet.
Coton's Escape Plan
Electrocorp scientists hoped Coton was still around in some metaphysical form, so they sent human brain wave shields with the virus to keep him clear-headed, assuming he could survive the first Anarchy shot if plugged into the net.
Through his pain and anger, Coton figured out a possible escape. He realized what the Electrocorp scientists must have done, remembering early A-virus tests.
There was a slim chance he could download his neuro-computerized-soul-essence into any of the hooked-up robots. Having trained them, he knew their weaknesses and strengths.
If he could download himself and erase the file transaction, he might have a chance. If he left a synthi-image of himself on the neuro-net, it would take the Supervisor about two hours to discover he was gone.
The robot plug ports lay before him on the neuro net. He could see all the robots and their derivations.
Coton had to decide very quickly which robot to enter. Which robot had the appropriate weaponry and characteristics to get him through the others to have another crack at the Supervisor. The Anarchy Virus was pumping like crazy around his mind. Yes, he wanted another go at her! He'd shut down her little show, erase her file, but which robot should he choose?
