Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a third-person action game with a focus on stealth, part of the long-running Metal Gear franchise. It takes place after Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker as a prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain , set in 1975.
The game features an open world design with a real-time day and night cycle, allowing for a more flexible approach than previous games. Players take on the role of Big Boss (Snake), who must infiltrate an American black site Camp Omega on Cuba to rescue Cipher agents Paz and Chico. The game's design offers freedom in how players choose to approach objectives, with a focus on stealth but also allowing for direct action if necessary.
Gameplay involves using tools such as the Soliton radar map, which has been replaced by an iDroid device that can be accessed through a handheld or mobile app. Enemies can be taken down using stealth tactics, such as knocking them out or taking them into a chokehold, or with direct action using guns and explosives. Players must also adapt to changing circumstances, such as light and shadow, to remain undetected.
The game includes additional side missions that can be unlocked, in addition to the main mission, providing further opportunities for players to experience the game's design.
