Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a third-person action game with a focus on stealth, part of the long-running Metal Gear franchise. It takes place after Peace Walker and sets the stage for The Phantom Pain as a prologue. The game follows Big Boss (Snake) in 1975, tasked with infiltrating an American black site on Cuba to free Cipher agent Paz and child soldier Chico.
The gameplay revolves around stealth, with players needing to use their wits to approach the situation without being detected. Snake can mark enemies through his binoculars to keep track of movement, but there is no camouflage system in place. Instead, cues need to be taken from the surroundings and the time of day. Players can choose between a stealthy approach or a more direct method using guns and explosives.
Combat options are plentiful, including the ability to knock out enemies with a knife or take them down with turrets and guns stolen from the base or soldiers. Enemies have a line of sight, and Snake can stay hidden by crouching. When detected, enemies become suspicious, triggering an alert mode that requires Snake to track their radio signals and wait for them to calm down.
Additional side missions are available in the same location as the main mission, set before it. A fifth side mission becomes accessible after collecting all XOF patches, depending on the system.
