Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a third-person action game with a focus on stealth, part of the long-running Metal Gear franchise. It takes place after Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker as a sub-series or prequel in the main franchise set long before Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots .
The game is set in 1975 and follows Big Boss (Snake) as he works with Militaires Sans Frontières to infiltrate an American black site Camp Omega on Cuba. The protagonist needs to free Cipher agent Paz and child soldier Chico, who are held in the base. The game offers a single objective to free them, and the player determines the approach. However, there is no camouflage system, and cues need to be taken from the surroundings and time of day.
The gameplay focuses on stealth, but also allows for a more direct approach with guns and explosives. A flare can be used to call in a helicopter, and different vehicles can be stolen and driven. Enemies can be knocked out or taken down with a knife, or threatened for information. The game features a sandbox design, where the player must use their wits to evade detection.
There are also additional side missions available, which can be unlocked in the same location as the main mission but set before it. A fifth side mission becomes available after collecting all XOF patches and is different on each system.
