When The Simpsons Game was released in 2007 for the Playstation 3, the members of the Simpsons family discovered they had unique superpowers after reading a video game manual. They soon found themselves at the center of an alien invasion led by Kang and Kodos.

The Simpsons Game is a 3D action game with platforming and light puzzle-solving elements. The game is divided into sixteen episodes, each containing cutscenes reminiscent of the original Simpsons TV series. Players control different members of the Simpson clan, using their unique powers to complete levels.

The four controllable characters have abilities that aid in combat, puzzle-solving, or exploration. Homer can transform into a rolling blob or float with helium; Bart can use his cape to grapple and move upwards in air streams. Lisa's "Hand of Buddha" ability is used for moving large objects and playing her saxophone to stun enemies. Marge can gather people with her megaphone and send Maggie into crawlspaces.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions contain free-roaming gameplay, allowing players to leave the Simpsons' house and explore virtual Springfield. Familiar landmarks are present, containing additional dialogue and events. Players can use the bus to travel quickly around the town.
