Double Dragon III: The Rosetta Stone , released on February 22, 1991, for the Famicom, takes place a year after the events of Double Dragon II: The Revenge . The Supreme Black Shadow Sensei and his Black Shadow Warriors are defeated, and Billy Lee has returned to running a dojo, training students in martial arts. However, when he's away, his dojo is attacked, and Marion is kidnapped.
Billy Lee, accompanied by his brother Jimmy in two-player mode, must travel the globe in five missions, visiting locations such as the U.S.A., China, Japan, Italy, and Egypt. Along the way, they'll encounter various enemies and allies, including Chin and Ranzou. Players can switch between these four characters, each with their own life bar, primary weapon, and secondary weapon.
The gameplay involves side-scrolling beat-'em-up action, with Billy Lee and Jimmy using punches, kicks, and special moves like cyclone spin kicks and flying jump kicks to defeat foes. Chin and Ranzou have similar abilities, but with their own unique twists. Players can also pick up items on the ground to use against enemies.
Double Dragon III: The Rosetta Stone features a distinct story, gameplay, enemies, and level design compared to other games in the series.
