Sniper Elite III is the third main game in the tactical shooter series based around a sniper, with Karl Fairburne, an Office of Strategic Services officer, as the protagonist. This title is set before the events of the previous game Sniper Elite V2 , and takes place during World War II. Fairburne is part of the North Africa campaign sent behind enemy lines to target a secret weapons programme of the Nazi troops. The game features bright and colourful African environments, which are very different from the dark Berlin ruins in the previous game.

The basic gameplay is similar to Sniper Elite V2 , with Fairburne needing to complete objectives in eight extensive levels using a variety of weapons and tactics. Direct action is possible, but not encouraged to complete levels entirely. The game features an expanded X-ray kill cam system, which allows players to take apart vehicles piece by piece until they explode. The biggest difference in design is the amount of freedom, with a nonlinear approach in a more open environment that encourages exploration and discovery.

The game's stealth system has been reworked, with an eye icon showing whether enemies can detect Fairburne. A circle meter over enemy heads shows their alertness, while a noise meter indicates when a silent shot is possible through sound masking. The game discourages staying in the same position for too long, and features a ghost image that appears to show an approximate position after a number of shots. This adds a new layer of strategy to the game.

The game features various multiplayer modes, including deathmatch, team deathmatch, Distant King (free-for-all or in teams), and cooperative Overwatch mode. Players can work together with a spotter to complete objectives, and earn medals and ribbons for their performances.


