Resident Evil 5 is a game that follows Chris Redfield as he takes on a new mission five years after the events of Resident Evil 4 . He is sent to Kijuju, Africa, where local agent Sheva Alomar joins him in his quest to apprehend Ricardo Irwing, who is trying to sell bio-weapons in the black market. However, they soon find themselves under attack by hordes of infected locals known as "majini", which are a result of an improved version of the "las plagas" parasite.

The gameplay in Resident Evil 5 includes a mix of action and strategy as Chris and Sheva must work together to survive against the infected enemies. The game features a cover system, allowing players to take cover behind objects to avoid enemy fire, while also using various guns, grenades, and melee attacks to defeat them. A second player can join in locally through split screen or online, requiring both characters to keep an eye on each other to succeed.

Another feature of the game is the mercenaries mode, which consists of closed levels where players must survive for as long as possible while defeating enemies to set up chains and earn points. This mode returns from Resident Evil 4 and provides a unique challenge for players.
