Test Drive Unlimited lets the player choose one of several characters to check in for their flight to O'ahu in Hawaii. The island is accessible from the beginning, and the player can drive around, look for events, or jump directly to a race, car dealership, or other locations.
The whole island is open to the player from the start, and after buying their first home and car, they can explore it freely. Each bought car has a built-in navigation system with a woman's voice guiding them to their destination.
There are over 125 cars and motorcycles in different price ranges available for purchase. From luxury models like the Audi TT and Jaguar XJ200 to high-performance bikes like the McLaren F1 and Kawasaki Z1000, there is something for everyone. Each car has realistic characteristics such as speed or handling.
The character starts with $200,000 dollars, but it won't last long after buying their first car and home. Additional cash needs to be earned through different types of races from checkpoint challenges to time trials. The money can be used to buy new homes, cars, and even clothing for the avatar.
The heart of Test Drive Unlimited is its online mode. Players connect to the official TDU server using a GameSpy account and gain access to features like player-created matches and statistics about other players.
The PSP and PS2 versions have lower visual quality and lack certain features, such as manual transmission, avatar customization, and some cars. However, they do include Master Points and Auto GPS, which are available in the Xbox 360 version through download packs.
