Alekhine's Gun is a stealth game, the spiritual successor to the Death to Spies series . The protagonist, KGB colonel Semyon Strogov, now operates under the codename Agent Alekhine. The game starts on November 22nd, 1963, and follows Agent Alekhine's missions as a flashback to an infiltration in Bergen in September 1943, explaining how he first met CIA agent Vincent Rambaldi. The plot focuses on a power struggle inside the CIA where certain forces aim to bring down the American government. There are eleven missions in total, each one set at different locations around the world, such as Norway and Cuba, and cities like Miami and Texas. The player must figure out the best way to approach each situation without any further clues or help.
Each mission offers a large location that can be tackled in many different ways. The player has to define a loadout with weapons that can also be upgraded before each mission. A ranking is awarded after each mission based on various factors, such as noise, violence, and accuracy. This ranking is rewarded with RP points that can be used to unlock and upgrade weapons.
A typical mission requires scouting the environment first, usually by taking out someone in a uniform or credentials to get their ID. Higher-ups can recognize Alekhine, so suspicious behavior often leads to an alarm. The player must use stealth tactics, such as garroting people or dragging bodies to different locations, and study patterns of NPCs to avoid detection.
There is an awareness meter that shows how suspicious the people are, and many items in the environment can be used to aid in stealth, such as cover, turning lights on or off, and sabotaging items. Locked doors can be opened through lock-picking mini-games, which take some time to complete. The player must study patterns or use uniforms or passes to get around quickly.
There is never a single approach to solving a problem in Alekhine's Gun , and multiple solutions exist. The game has four difficulty levels that influence the AI and offer options such as never changing clothes or only after certain attacks. An in-game map is available at all times.
Alekhine's Gun was released for the Xbox One on March 11th, 2016, and is classified as an Action & Adventure game.
