Game Setup Menus
Before going into battle, you will need to make a few choices. Selecting how you want to play "Ballerburg" happens after the player selection screen.
Player Selection
After the title screen and intro, the player selection screen will appear. If you have a memory card with at least one free block in MEMORY CARD slot 1, all saved games and victories for up to 10 players will be stored automatically.
The first time you start playing, you choose the name and coat of arms by which you want to be identified in all your battles. When you select your player name, all of your victories and saved games are loaded automatically.

Tutorials
You can learn everything you need to know about "Ballerburg" in three special tutorials. Each tutorial covers an important aspect of "Ballerburg":
•
Tutorial 1 - Aiming and firing: This first tutorial gives you an introduction to the basic user interface. It then shows you how to control and aim your weapons.
•
Tutorial 2 - Building: The second tutorial explains the economic system on which the game is based. You learn all about farmers and the tax rate. You are also shown how to construct buildings and weapons.
•
Tutorial 3 - Research and magic: The third and last tutorial shows you how to obtain better weapons through research, how to build zeppelins for aerial battle and how to use magic and cast spells effectively.
Campaigns
"Ballerburg" offers the player a total of four campaigns. The campaigns have varying levels of difficulty. The easiest is the Forest campaign; followed by the Desert campaign, then the Ice campaign, and your greatest challenge will be the Volcano campaign.
You are always free to choose which campaign you want to play. However, it's a good idea to begin with the Forest campaign. Whenever you complete a level within a campaign successfully, you will move up to the next level. Each campaign has eight levels to battle through. Each campaign targets a particular princess, with you fighting on behalf of one of the other princesses.
Scenery Variation
You can stipulate the terrain: would you rather it was flat or craggy? Do you prefer warm and sunny or icy cold?
Enemy Settings
Specifying the number of enemies
You can face between one and a maximum of three enemies. As, for example, three against one isn't particularly fair; you are awarded various bonuses, depending on the scenario. These are described again in more detail in the section about scenarios.
Setting the enemy AI level
The enemies' strength levels are divided into levels ranging from 1 to 10. A level 1 enemy couldn't hit a barn door if he was sitting on the handle, whereas a level 10 enemy's shots hit home nearly every time.
Action Mode
In Action Mode, we're talking a fast and furious exchange of blows. In this mode, both friend and foe are faced with castles that are armed to the teeth. The winner is the first to destroy all enemy weapons.
With two enemies, each enemy has five weapons, but if there are three, each only has 3 weapons at his disposal. In this mode you can only aim and fire. You can't construct buildings or weapons or use magic.
The palace and weapons are repaired automatically, provided that there's a mason's yard and
