A young boy named Momotaros lives with his family on a small island surrounded by water. His mom is sick and can only communicate through a magical, gemstone-like object called a "Jade Cocoon". The Jade Cocoon allows her to see the past and present, but she's unable to speak or move due to her illness. Momotaros decides to set out on a journey to save his mother and uncover the secrets behind the Jade Cocoon.
The gameplay in Jade Cocoon Story of the Tamamayu is primarily focused on exploration and battling enemies. Players control Momotaros as he navigates through various environments, including forests, temples, and cities.
