Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is set in a universe where tensions between the Confederation and the Border Worlds are at an all-time high after a series of attacks on civilian ships. Admiral Tolwyn has recalled Christopher Blair, who had retired to a farming planet, back into service. Blair must make the most difficult choice of his life as he contemplates taking action in the name of justice.

Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom combines elements of interactive movie and space simulation. The game features a dynamic mission tree, where the player's actions determine the next mission. Real actors, including Mark Hamill, Tom Wilson, John Rhys-Davies, and Malcolm McDowell, star in the videos that feature in the game. Before each mission, the player can equip their spacecraft with different weapons, which can be changed mid-mission if necessary. The player is also faced with tough decisions, such as helping a friend or destroying an enemy fighter.
