Rainbow Six 3 is an entry in the long-running series designed especially for consoles. It does away with the heavy strategy and planning elements the series was known for on the PC and offers an experience more focused on first-person action. The game features 14 single-player levels, where the player controls Domingo 'Ding' Chavez, who leads a team of three other Rainbow operatives. The story revolves around an unidentified group of terrorists who attack high-profile targets in 2004, targeting oil refineries and disrupting global trade. Team Rainbow must stop the terrorists and discover who is behind the attacks. Before each mission, the player must equip their squad mates with primary and secondary weapons, as well as additional equipment.
Gameplay involves completing objectives such as taking out terrorists, defusing bombs, and protecting hostages. The squad mates will act on their own in supporting the mission, but the player can also give them specific orders through a context-sensitive menu. There are also features like voice recognition on Xbox versions, allowing for more dynamic team ordering.
Despite the action focus, the game maintains a level of realism, with more than a few hits being fatal and no way to regain lost health. The game also includes custom mission mode, where players can hunt terrorists on unlocked maps from the campaign.
The multiplayer modes include cooperative campaign and custom mission modes, as well as timed deathmatch modes like Sharpshooter and Survival. However, multiplayer features vary between platforms, with limited options available on GameCube and PS2 compared to Xbox.
