The gameplay is based on a control scheme called Total Racquet Control, which allows players to determine the accuracy, power and precision of shots using the right analogue stick. This system can be practiced under the guidance of John McEnroe in the Academy, or used with a separate control layout where different buttons are assigned for specific shots.

The main career mode can last up to ten years, where a new player can go through multiple seasons until the number one spot is reached. Players can participate in training sessions, exhibition matches, minor tournaments, and online matches, all of which contribute to a total ranking. They can also design a custom tennis player with options such as outfits, accessories and equipment, and play classic players with trademark moves and a playing style based on their real-life style.
