LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is an action game that brings together over 100 Marvel heroes and villains from various franchises. The player controls the good guys to save the Earth from a team of evil forces led by Galactus, known as The Devourer of the Worlds, in a style reminiscent of LEGO adventures with its blocky cartoonish visual style and gameplay.

The game's world is made up of Manhattan as an explorable open world, along with the Marvel HQ and various other recognizable locations. Players can explore these areas, complete story mode levels in different worlds like Asgard, Bifrost, and Asteroid M, and engage with Marvel-related buildings in New York City.

Players start out controlling Iron Man and Hulk, with Spider-Man joining them soon after. As the game progresses, more characters become available through advancing in the game or collecting Gold Bricks. These bricks can be found by exploring Manhattan, completing side quests, and finishing story mode levels. Unlocking these characters also gives access to bonus levels, extra outfits, and vehicles.

Other collectibles like Minikits, Deadpool bricks, and Character tokens can be obtained through various means. The game has a large cast of 27 voice actors bringing the in-game dialogues to life. Additionally, the Wii U version allows for off-TV play using the GamePad, while the two-player mode features unique gameplay options.
